Rodent Prevention: Easy ways to keep mice and rats out when the weather gets cold

Fall

When the weather gets cold, rodents look for warm, safe places with food and water, often our homes. Even tidy houses can get visits from mice and rats because they can squeeze through tiny gaps. Mice can fit through an opening about the size of a dime (approximately 18 mm or 0.7 in). Rats can squeeze through an opening about the size of a quarter (approximately 24 mm or 1 in).

Why it matters

Once inside, rodents can:

  • Chew wires, insulation, and drywall, causing costly damage and fire risks.
  • Contaminate surfaces and potentially spread illness to people and pets.

How to keep them out (outside)

  • Seal entry points: Caulk or repair cracks, gaps, and holes around doors, windows, vents, and utility lines.
  • Trim vegetation: Keep branches and shrubs away from the house.
  • Store firewood smartly: Keep it at least 20 ft (6 m) from the home and 5 ft (1.5 m) off the ground.

How to reduce activity (inside)

  • Reduce hiding spots: Store boxes on shelves, not the floor.
  • Watch for signs: Look for gnaw marks on wires, insulation, and walls, as well as droppings or shredded nesting material.
  • Keep things clean: Wipe up crumbs, store food in sealed containers, and take out garbage regularly.

When to get help

Rodent problems can grow quickly. If you notice signs of activity, skip DIY natural methods and contact a licensed pest control professional for a proper inspection and treatment plan.
