Ways to pest proof your home

Abell Pest Control Ways to pest proof your home

Once you have pests, you're bound to get frustrated and grossed out quickly. Many people may immediately call a pest management company or grab pesticides over the sight of a few insects. However, many times these nuisances can be prevented from entering the home with a few simple tips. Though certain creatures come with specific prevention methods, there are some basic tips in pest control across the board. Consider these tips to keep pests away from your home.

Seal your entryways

One of the easiest ways to keep pests out of your home is to install small insulation pieces that sit on the bottom of your doors, known as door sweeps, the University of Kentucky noted. Pests can easily crawl underneath the cracks of doors and garage openings, which is why accessing homes is so easy. However, a good door sweep will keep them out. As an added bonus, it also keeps heat from escaping from your home in the winter. Once installed, lie on the floor to examine how much light gets in. There shouldn't be any.

Get caulking

Sealing up small cracks and crevices in your home each year is one of the simplest tips to prevent pests from crawling in, Rodale News stated. Caulking guns make the job even easier and save you a lot of time. Look for long-lasting silicone caulk or acrylic latex caulk. You may want a caulk that dries clear, as it will be harder to spot any mistakes in your sealant job. Seal any openings or holes in your home, but also seal windows, door frames, dryer vents and openings for outdoor wires. If you notice a hole that's really big, plug it with steel wool first. Then apply the sealant over the wool for added protection from mice and larger pests.

Clean the kitchen

Every day, take a little time to clean your kitchen up. Wipe down counters with vinegar, which can eliminate food trails and any unseen pathways from pests. Insects and rodents have a tendency to recognize the smell of others, and may come crawling in if they catch a quick scent. Clean dirty dishes in your sink or place them in the dishwasher, mop and sweep floors and vacuum all rugs around the home. If any pests have already gotten into your home, vacuuming may eliminate them quickly. You should also discard old newspapers and mail, which may attract certain pests such as silverfish.

If your home is in fairly rough shape, it's not worth it to do it on your own. Call an inspector or a pest control company for a free consultation and figure out where your weakest points are and what you can do about them.
