5 pests that will follow you home

Abell Pest Control

Many pests find their own way into your house, but these five will hitch a ride inside on your clothing or skin.

  1. Mites
Mites are tiny creatures that come in a wide variety. Some like to hang out in cheese and some take rides on local sparrow populations. According to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, only a few of these species actually bite humans, but the just having them in your home is a big nuisance. Rats and birds can carry mites to your property, and that means the best way to control the mites is to stop their rides. Properly maintaining your house will prevent mites from hitching a ride inside on a larger animal.

  2. Ticks
Ticks resemble mites visually, and they are related. Both are arthropods. Ticks like to hang out in tall grass where they can latch on to passing mammals, like dogs and humans. The most common ticks in North America are the American dog, brown dog, blacklegged and Rocky Mountain wood tick. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these little pests transmit such diseases as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and Powassan disease.

  3. Bed Bugs
Anyone who has gone through the process of bed bug removal will tell you that it is not fun. Often, these pests are carried home after staying in a hotel or other public area. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency listed several tips for staying safe when traveling. It's always a good idea to check a hotel room mattress, even if the place seems clean. A flashlight can help you see if anything is crawling around your sheets. And when you return home, put all of your clothing into the washing machine as soon as possible.
  4. Chiggers
Chiggers like the same hiding places as ticks. In the summer and fall, chiggers wait in the tall grass, ready to take a quick bite out of your ankle as you pass by. The U.S. National Library of Medicine explained that chigger bites are initially painless, but become extremely itchy and inflamed. To keep from bringing any home, use bug spray when outdoors.

  5. Thrips
This is a creature you could accidentally bring home from the local garden center or greenhouse. They like to live on plants and they can kill shrubs, trees, and vegetable crops, according to the University of California. This pest might be interested in your flesh and blood, but if it gets into your home, it could wreak havoc upon your house plants.
