How to avoid bed bugs at a laundromat

Abell Pest Control

Many people in metropolitan areas without an in-house washer and dryer will travel to their local laundromat. However, sometimes these public places hold a little more than a few washing machines. They may have bed bugs too. Consider these tips to avoid bed bugs at your laundromat.

How bedbugs end up in laundromats

Many people may be confused as to why bed bugs appear at a laundromat. Well, despite laundry machines being a place to get rid of bed bugs, you can also get them here. Many people frequent coin laundromats every day, and some of their clothes may be carrying a little more than dirt and odor. Bed bugs love to hide in linens and clothing, so if they get into the laundromat via someone's dirty clothes, they could spread like wildfire throughout the facility. While a hot wash will kill bed bugs, this pest can survive a cold wash, noted. That means the next time you go to do a load, you may be bringing home bed bugs in your items if you don't run the machine on hot.

Pest control tips

  • Be mindful of all surfaces: Bed bugs are constantly on the move. So, if they initially began their adventure in a cold-water washing machine, they may crawl out and end up on the floor, in clothing baskets or even on counter tops. That means you need to be mindful of where you place your belongings at all times. Before putting a load in the wash, check the inside for any signs of this pest. You should also inspect surfaces and bins before putting your clothes on them.

  • Use high temperature: If you can, try to wash all of your items in a machine at the highest temperature available, Brick Underground advised. If some item is not suitable for hot water, it may be a better idea to wash it at home or have it dry cleaned.

  • Transfer clothing: People can also avoid bed bugs by using a before and after basket for clothing to prevent the transfer of bugs.
