How to prevent pests in your retail store

Abell Pest Control

If you're a store owner, you know that you want to keep your customers as happy as possible. So, you don't want customers complaining about a hole in their pants, or much worse, a bed bug in their fitting room. Though it may seem like an uncommon occurrence, pests will make themselves right at home anywhere, and retail stores are no exception. If you own a store or even a store manager, you don't want this happening to you. Consider these tips to keep pests out of your store.

Get to know the enemy

If you suspect you have bed bugs in your store, the first thing you need to do is to learn what you're up against, Central Ohio Bed Bugs advised. Do some research on bed bugs and find out what they're capable of, and why they are considered to be such a problematic pest. Bed bugs often are silent killers - they tend to come creeping during the night into beds, which is where they got their name. However, they don't always come out at night. They'll gladly come out onto clothing or people if they think its an opportune feeding time. Unlike common beliefs, bed bugs can't fly, as they don't have wings. Bed bugs also populate quickly, and have a tendency to live a long time. Fully grown bugs can live as long as a year without a feeding on human or animal blood.

Find them

Once you've gotten to know your pest, its important to know how to identify them correctly, the University of Minnesota stated. These bugs are small, and are often hard to spot. However, they do leave a notorious trail behind them. Look for small blood stains on clothing that may have been caused by bites. You also can also identify small eggs on clothing. Look around clothing seams, as that is where they usually will catch. You also will want to notify employees to look for these common signs as well.

Lower the clutter

Bed bugs are fond of clutter. Keep bugs away from clutter by keeping your store organized. If your store has a tendency to get messy quickly, with piles of clothing falling over, encourage employees to keep an eye on them to make sure they are in neat, folded piles. You also will want to vacuum regularly and reduce dust that accumulates around the clothing racks, as bed bugs may try to hide within it.

If you have a significant infestation in your store, don't wait to call a pest management company. Contact a relative business immediately to have the problem taken care of professionally so you can get back to normal.
