Wasps in Your Apartment? Here’s How to Keep Them Out

Abell Pest Control

A single wasp outside may not bother most people, but when one is buzzing around inside—especially in a small apartment—it’s a different story. Wasps are fast, aggressive, and unpredictable, often catching tenants off guard. Even more unsettling, they tend to infiltrate apartment complexes, leaving residents scratching their heads. If sharing your space with wasps sends shivers down your spine, here’s what you need to know to prevent these unwanted visitors.

Why Do Wasps Enter Apartments?

Wasps often appear in apartments during the winter, an unexpected time for most people who associate them with warmer months. However, their life cycle explains this curious behaviour.

In the spring, paper wasps build nests made from a papery fiber they create. By fall, the males in the colony have died off, but not before impregnating the queens. These pregnant females then seek shelter to survive the winter, often finding refuge inside the walls of buildings.

Once inside, they remain dormant until they sense warmth, which can come from heating systems in apartment walls. Mistaking this for summer, the wasps emerge, often through cracks, light fixtures, or floorboards, startling tenants.

Tips to Keep Wasps Out of Your Apartment

  1. Act Quickly If you notice wasps in your apartment, deal with the issue promptly. While winter wasps may seem sluggish from their hibernation, they can become more active and aggressive over time. Acting promptly can prevent more wasps from emerging. Notify your landlord and recommend professional pest control services to handle the infestation properly.
  2. Vacuum or Sweep Them Out When wasps are moving slowly, take advantage of their lethargy. Use a vacuum to remove them or carefully guide them out of a door or window with a broom. Many wasps instinctively move toward light, so this task can often be completed without much confrontation.
  3. Seal Entry Points in the Fall Prevention is key. Wasps typically enter apartments in the fall when seeking shelter for the winter. Inspect your apartment for small cracks or openings where they might sneak in, such as gaps in windows, holes in screens, or cracks in floorboards. Seal these areas with caulk, weatherstripping, or screen patches to block their access.
