Vigilance is key in keeping bed bugs out of the home

Abell Pest Control

Bed bugs are infamous for their ability to infest spaces, both residential and commercial. Home pest control isn't always limited to practices inside the home, especially when it comes to bed bugs.

Though it's important to check the home regularly for bed bugs, it's essential to practice constant vigilance in areas outside the house as well. These invasive creatures feed exclusively on human blood and can be difficult to treat, according to the New York State Department of Health.

Keep bed bugs out

The most effective method of prevention is not allowing bed bugs to enter your home in the first place. Bed bugs can be found virtually anywhere, including hotels. The University of California Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources noted that there's been a recent resurgence in bed bug populations. This may be related to a higher rate of and easier access to global travel, changes in pesticides, higher resistance to insecticides and more.

The University of Minnesota noted that bed bugs can also be found in schools, libraries, retail facilities and other public areas. Therefore, being aware of your surroundings at all times can alert you to any bed bugs that may be present. If you come across any, regardless of where you may be, put your clothes from the day through the wash on the hottest settings that the items will allow. If you had a backpack or other bag, including it in the cleaning process will ensure that any bed bugs that may have hitched a ride won't make it into your bedroom.

If you don't have time to do a load of laundry, seal the items in an airtight bag. While this won't eliminate the bed bug problem, it'll help prevent infestation. Once you do have time to clean the clothes and bags, you can rest easy knowing that any pests are kept inside the bag.
