Top 4 fall pests

Abell Pest Control

Autumn is a fun season because the leaves are changing color, the big holidays are right around the corner, and there's all kinds of new treats to try. But it's also the time of year when more pests may try to invade your home. As they look to escape from the chilly nights, pests might see your home as the perfect hideaway. Be prepared for some of the season's top pests by reading the tips below:

  1. Ants
One or two ants in your home isn't a big problem, but when you see lines of insects marching along your kitchen countertops, it's time to take action. Ants on patrol are generally looking for food and water to bring back to the colony. If many ants are in your home, it means they already consider it to be a prime hunting and gathering spot. At that point, you may have to turn to chemical pesticides. A professional pest control service can spray around the outside of your home to keep the ants from coming inside. The University of Nebraska suggested scrubbing the invaded areas to reduce the pheromone trails left by scouting ants.
  2. Wasps
According to the University of California, wasps will often take over abandoned rodent dens in the fall to create hidden hives. Then, when you're least expecting it, you might see a swarm of wasps emerging from a small hole in the ground. This is especially true of homeowners doing their fall maintenance work. Wasp stings can be quite painful, so you should be extremely careful if spraying a nest with insecticide. If you or a family member is allergic to wasp stings, you may want to consider hiring a professional pest control service to handle the problem.
  3. Rodents
Mice are typically on the lookout for a warm burrow when autumn comes around. If you have piles of leaves and twigs in your lawn, mice might look at these as pre-built mansions. To prevent mice from making your yard their home, clean up plant debris as soon as possible. The same goes for trash - keep it away from your home and make sure it is taken away regularly. Traps and poison bait are good options for rodent control, though you must be careful if you have small children or pets.
  4. Boxelder bugs
In some parts of North America, autumn means increased populations of boxelder bugs. According to the University of Minnesota, these bugs are generally half an inch in length and have red markings along the edges of their wings. They are extremely attracted to the warm provided by homes. Severe infestations can cover entire walls and rooms. If they find a way inside your home, it's best to call a professional. Before they become a problem, make sure your home is completely sealed. Insecticides might be necessary if a large swarm of boxelder bugs appears.
