Winter Intruders: Shut Out Rats, Mice & Squirrels Mid-Season
Abell Pest Control
Rats. Mice. Squirrels. Mid-winter is when these pests push hardest for warmth, shelter, and food, and you may only notice them once they’re already active inside. Don’t wait and see. Check, seal, and act fast before a small entry point turns into a bigger problem.
The Big Three (and how little space they need)
Mice: ¼ in (6 mm) gap is enough
Rats: ¾ in (19 mm) gap is enough
Squirrels: 2½ in (64 mm) openings around rooflines/vents can do it
Where they’re getting in right now
Mice & rats: garages, basements, foundation cracks, gaps around pipes/wiring, under decks/along siding Squirrels: roof edges, soffits/vents, loose shingles, attic-line openings, branches touching the roof
Signs you shouldn’t ignore
Mice: rice-sized droppings, musty urine smell, scratching/gnawing at night
Rats: larger droppings, dark rub marks near entry points, skittering in walls/ceilings
Squirrels: daytime thumping in attic, torn insulation, chewing near vents/roofline
What works now
Seal properly:
Mice: copper mesh/bronze wool + sealant
Rats: steel wool + durable sealant
Squirrels: repair shingles, secure vents/soffits, reinforce roof gaps Tip: If you suspect squirrels are already inside, don’t seal them in.
Remove the “welcome mat”: airtight food storage, pet food put away, fix leaks, reduce clutter (especially cardboard)
Block roof routes: trim branches, check roof edges after storms, repair damage immediately
24–48-hour checklist
Walk the exterior for fresh gaps, droppings, gnawing, rub marks
Check garage door seals and corners
Inspect around utility lines (inside and out)
Listen: night activity (rodents), daytime attic noise (squirrels)
Secure food and pet food
Bottom line: If you’re hearing noises, seeing droppings, or spotting damage, it’s time to act, mid-winter pest pressure can escalate quickly.
