Cockroach Control

Preventing and Controlling Cockroaches

There are approximately 4000 species of cockroaches worldwide. Some biologists consider cockroaches to be one of the most adaptive and successful insect groups on the planet. Most cockroaches are only active at night and prefer a moist environment. Cockroaches are scavengers and will feed on a wide variety of foods. Cockroaches are not social insects and spend up to 75% of their time at rest hiding in protected areas which makes low-level infestation difficult to detect.

The most common species of cockroaches in North America that restaurant owners and property managers should be most on the lookout for are the German cockroach, American cockroach, brown-banded cockroach, oriental cockroach, smoky-brown cockroach, and the Australian cockroach.

The best warning sign of a cockroach infestation is to see one, but it's not easy since they're nocturnal. Large infestations may be visible during the day in clusters. Cockroaches are usually near food or water, so damp spaces are the most popular spots.

Wherever they are, people tend to cringe, and for good reason. In addition to their connection to filth, cockroaches carry diseases, including salmonella, and cause an allergic reaction in people with asthma and related allergies.

Cockroach droppings can trigger allergies and increase the severity of asthma symptoms, especially in children. They are also capable of transmitting disease and spreading bacteria.

It's important to pay attention to signs of an infestation and act if cockroaches are found. Contact a licensed pest control professional to identify the type of cockroach.

  2. Inspect incoming goods such coming into facilities and homes.
  3. Inspect food deliveries before putting them in kitchens.
