The red widow spider has a reddish-orange head, thorax and legs with a black abdomen. The top of the abdomen typically has a row of red spots with yellow borders. The egg sac is white and smooth.

Red Widow spiders do not typically have the well-known hourglass marking on the underside of their abdomen, but instead have only one single red mark, which resembles a flattened triangle.

The web of adult red widow spiders is generally upwards of 30 cm above the ground. Restricted to inland areas of dry sand dunes, red widow spiders construct their webs in palmettos scrubs . When prey fly into their web, the red widow spider rushes out to make the capture.

Adult red widow spiders eat crickets and other large insects, while spiderlings (baby spiders) eat flightless fruit flies and pinhead crickets.
