Tips to rid your home of wasps and hornets

Abell Pest Control

One of the most intimidating pests you can come across is the wasp. Unlike the honey bee, which pollinates flowers and can only sting once, the wasp can sting multiple times and doesn’t play a major role in pollination. While it's true that certain species of parasitic wasps can help control other pests, many types are simply a nuisance, especially when they start building nests around your home.

Yellowjackets

Not only do yellowjackets pose a threat of painful stings, but their nests can also cause structural damage to your house. It’s best to act at the first sign of an infestation before it gets out of hand. Yellowjackets are easily recognized by their bright yellow bodies, and their nests have a papery texture with a fully enclosed design, except for a small entrance.

Small problems can usually be handled with wasp sprays from a home and garden store, but larger infestations may require professional removal. More on yellowjackets here.

Paper Wasps

Paper wasps are similar in behavior to yellowjackets and can also be a major nuisance. They look somewhat alike, though paper wasps tend to be darker or more reddish. Their nests are typically more open and umbrella-shaped, often hanging from eaves or tree branches. While they do eat insects like caterpillars, which can help with pest control, they’re still not ideal to have around your home. They can be removed with over-the-counter insecticides. Cicada Killers

Cicada killers aren’t usually a big issue, but during years with a large cicada population, they can become more noticeable. These large wasps dig nests in the ground, which can damage lawns and landscaping. Females have been known to sting people during yard work if their nests are disturbed. Though generally less aggressive than other wasps, they can still be a problem under certain conditions. Learn about cicada killers here.

Dealing with Wasps

When it comes to wasps or hornets, caution is key. The likelihood of getting stung varies by species, but the pain is often intense. If you’re unsure about tackling a nest on your own, it’s usually best to contact a professional pest control service.
