Are common house spiders dangerous?

Abell Pest Control

Short answer: usually no. Most house spiders are shy, avoid people, and their bites are rare. When they do bite (typically only if trapped or handled), the symptoms are generally mild, similar to a mosquito bite or a wasp sting. The well-known medically significant species (like black widows) are uncommon indoors and are not the typical “house spiders” you see in corners and basements.

What you’re likely seeing at home

  • Triangulate/comb-footed spiders (“cobweb” makers): nuisance webs, not dangerous to people.
  • Ground spiders: hunt at floor level, prefer dark areas; not dangerous.
  • Orb-weavers (big, outdoor webs): usually stay outside; a bite is uncommon and typically mild.

Bottom line: most “house spiders” help by eating other pests and aren’t a threat to your family or pets.

Signs you have spiders

  • Webs in corners, basements, window frames, or storage areas
  • Occasional sightings near lights (where insects gather)

How to reduce spiders without harsh chemicals

  1. Cut off their food supply: keep flying/ crawling insects down with good sanitation and door/window screening.
  2. Vacuum webs and egg sacs regularly (dispose of the bag afterward).
  3. Seal entry points: caulk gaps around doors, windows, utility lines, and foundation cracks.
  4. Reduce clutter & moisture: tidy storage areas; use a dehumidifier in damp basements.
  5. Use sticky monitors in corners to track activity (places where kids/pets can’t access).

When to call a pro

  • You’re seeing many spiders repeatedly
  • You suspect a medically significant species
  • DIY steps aren’t reducing activity
