Integrated Pest Management

The widely recognized Integrated Pest Management approach is the key to becoming green in the pest control community today. IPM is a preventative approach to pest control and is based upon the philosophy that chemical control should be limited and used only as a last resort. This approach effectively replaces traditional pest control methods and requires detailed inspections, thorough structural awareness, knowledge of pest biology and habits, and good sanitation practices. With this arsenal of information Abell Pest Control Technicians are able to make physical alterations to a pest organism’s surroundings making conditions uninhabitable for these pests but not for people, plants, pets and wildlife. Utilizing IPM methods will prevent pest infestations and rid structures of current infestations.

Physical pest control can be achieved through a variety of methods such as the elimination of the food source, altering temperature or humidity of the inhabited area and eliminating access points in the structure. Special tools are needed in some cases to achieve these outcomes.

What are some of the tools in Abell’s eco-toolbox?

  • Bioremediation
  • Heat Treatment
  • Organic Pest Control

Abell’s Bioremediation Service utilizes microbes carried within thick white foam to consume grease and organic matter that is present within drains, dumpsters, on restaurant floors and in commercial washrooms. Why? This build up is what small flies such as fruit flies feed on and reproduce in. Rather than applying pesticides in these areas, Abell utilizes the Integrated Pest Management approach to eliminate the fly’s food source thereby reducing the attractiveness of these areas to pests. This all-natural, food grade product contains live vegetative microbes that are environmentally safe!

Abell is also giving insects the Heat Treatment! No, it’s not a spa procedure. A Heat Treatment literally turns up the heat on stored product and other insect pests. Severe infestations in warehouses, food processing and other facilities can be removed through the heating process. Heating not only increases the temperature making environmental conditions unfavourable, but also removes moisture from the air. Ambient humidity is very important to insect survival, and removing this moisture quickly dries out their protective cuticle. Increasing the temperature of a building or a specific room is possible with the use of specialized heaters, fans and other equipment. A specific target temperature is required, and at this temperature it becomes too hot and too dry for insects to survive. The heating process eliminates the need for excessive and time-consuming chemical procedures and the downtime associated with these procedures. The Abell Heat Treatment is 100% environmentally safe and eliminates unnecessary pesticide exposure.

The demand for organically produced food is increasing steadily in North America. Organic food – food produced entirely in the absence of pesticides requires strict adherence to guidelines by food producers and processors. Abell Pest Control supports organic processors through our IPM program. Focusing on source pest reduction, sanitary design and structural soundness, Abell is able to help organic processors prevent or eliminate infestations by using organic food standards, thereby safeguarding the organic food supply for consumers.
