Abell Pest Control Keep an eye out for these common warehouse pests

Pests can cause serious problems in warehouses and storage facilities, which can damage goods and derail business. Many warehouse managers and owners of distribution or transportation centers enlist the help of pest control services to monitor the insects and animals that can call these large commercial spaces home.

Pest management firms can help monitor a warehouse with electronic mapping technology and remove pests that are found. If you're unsure whether there are pests in your warehouse, look out for some of the warning signs of the most common insects and animals that infest large storage spaces.

Stored-product pests

Often grouped together, meal moths, rice weevils, flour beetles and several other insects are common pests in food storage areas. With their excrement and eggs, these pests can contaminate food, ruin shipments and worry customers. One stored-product pest is the warehouse beetle, which burrows through cardboard and other paper products to make its home on the inside of boxes.

The best warning signs of these small and diverse insect species are holes in packaging and food products. They can be difficult to spot with the untrained eye, so consider enlisting commercial pest control help.

Rats

Like most pests, rats are just looking for a quiet place with food and water. Warehouses are attractive to rats because they often have dark areas hidden by pallets or boxes where they can live undisturbed. Rats aren't attractive to warehouses, however. Not only can they carry disease and parasites, but rats chew through wires, boxes and wood - all of which can disrupt the flow of business and ruin products.

Rats usually leave behind signs of their residence if you don't spot one outright. Bite marks on packaging and debris, especially near food, is a solid sign you may have rats. Droppings and mud as well as greasy smears are other signs that rats may be infesting your space. Squealing and scurrying noises after dark can also mean that rats may be on the premises.

Pest birds

Birds, particularly pigeons, can settle in or above a warehouse and cause serious trouble. Much like rats in the way that they can carry parasites and disease, pest birds are a health risk. One of the easiest ways to spot birds is through their excrement. Pigeon feces are not only a warning sign, but also a corrosive substance that can damage goods as well as structures.

Whether you suspect a bird, rodent or insect issue in your warehouse, pest management services can help you figure out the best ways to terminate the problem and prevent future infestations in a warehouse no matter how large the structure.
