Abell Pest Control How to get rid of fruit flies in a bar

Fruit flies have a way of making it into everything. Though they're small, they become an annoyance fast when they buzz around people's faces. Bartenders and bar owners may become perturbed when these little pests cause them to lose customers and money. Consider these tips to keep fruit flies out of your bar.

Why fruit flies like bars?

Many beverages and alcohol served at a bar are sweet. This sweetness attracts fruit flies, as does a dirty bar or kitchen. These pests have a few particular types of alcohol they like more than others, but plenty of types suit their fancy, the Dollar Stretcher noted. They especially love bar owners who keep out old used glasses, soda, or beer bottles and cans for long periods of time. Once the flies have arrived, they plan to stay, usually breeding immediately after moving in. They tend to peruse areas at night, when fewer people are around and the bar is quiet.

How to keep the flies out

Luckily, there are a few simple ways to get rid of these pests.

Use what you've got

Because fruit flies are attracted to so many different types of alcohol in your bar, why not use that to your advantage? All you have to do is make a simple trap, Bars and Bartending noted. Grab a bar glass and put a little alcohol in it, such as wine or tequila. Place plastic wrap on the top of the glass and poke a few holes in it. The flies will be attracted to the scent of the alcohol and will attempt to make their way into the glass. Once they're in, they become trapped in the liquid and can't fly out.

Prevent them in the first place

One of the best ways to handle a fruit fly problem is to not have an issue to deal with in the first place. One of the easiest ways to do this is to keep your bar clean. Not only will it keep flies away, but it will also attract customers.

  • Take the trash out: Bars make a lot of trash. Constantly take this garbage out, or you might be welcoming fruit flies to breed in your bins.
  • Wipe down surfaces: Bars have a tendency to get sticky from spilled drinks. These sticky surfaces attract plenty of fruit flies. Keep them at bay by wiping down the counters every day, even more than once a day.
  • Cover taps and liquor bottles: If you're not careful, you could be making an easy trap for flies. Cover all the bottles or you could be making another trap for them to enter into. The last thing you want is to serve a customer a drink with a fly in it.
